Not all demons have talons

Have you ever seen a predator go in for the kill because it realizes that something else is about to catch its prey? If you answered no, then you’ve never seen a high school girlfriend realize that her boyfriend is talking to another female classmate.

Mackenzie had to have broken some Olympic records with how fast she swooped in and broke up our conversation, dragging Allan off to Statistics class.

So sad for Mackenzie, because I sit two rows behind Allan in that class. Sure enough, half way through the class, a note got passed back to me and landed on my desk with the quietest tap. Of course it wasn’t so quiet that Mackenzie didn’t notice with a scowl.

I ignored her piercing gaze and opened the letter. Dear Chariot, I rolled my eyes at the formality. I’ve never talked to anyone about this, and I promise to keep your secret as well. Please, what monsters are you talking about?

Before passing the note up to him, I wrote, You first. Tell me about the angels.

“Statistically,” the teacher droned, “What are the chances that any of you will actually get the job of your dreams?”

The note appeared back on my desk. Fair enough, he’d written. This is going to sound so crazy, but I see these beautiful, magical looking things that are full of light. I call them angels, but I don’t think that’s what they are. Anytime there is a good or happy feeling, they will find it and help it to spread.

A deep, emerald green mist started seeping under the closed classroom door. I groaned inside. The approaching monster was annoying, but I was still surprised to see it. For the most part, the only monster that dared come in to Statistics class was Failure. Everything else was bored to death the moment they entered the room.

I quickly wrote back a response. You just described the monsters, but in reverse. They survive on negative emotions and are ug-lee.

Mackenzie glared at me when I passed the note back. Ah, the Jealousy was coming for her.

Sure enough, the emerald green monster with glowing gems for eyes and long, beautiful hair solidified next to Allan’s girlfriend and drummed her long, slender fingers on Mackenzie’s desk.

I rolled my eyes, just as the note came back to me.

“Statistically,” said the teacher, “What are the chances that you grow up and get divorced?”

The note had two thoughts: Seriously? Are there any in this room?

I wrote back: Other than the Jealousy that’s attached itself to your girlfriend?

As soon as Allan read my response, he blanched, looking over at Mackenzie like she had a malicious disease.

He wrote me: Yikes. For the record, we aren’t officially boyfriend girlfriend or anything like that.

I responded: Thus the Jealousy. So … did I really have an angel on my shoulder?

He smiled when he opened my note, his shoulders shaking as he chuckled.
